Abstract:

The present study had as main objective to investigate the Human Cost of Activity and the Strategies of Meditation related to the Quality of Working Life, of maids, in a hotel context. I worked with the perspective of the existence of a paradox, where only the guest had the right of well-being due to the experiences of uneasiness among the workers. The research took place inside a hotel in Brasilia, belonging to an international group. The presented demand refers to the exaggerated incidence of health certificates. In order to give support to the preventing approach of the Quality of Working Life by Mendes and Ferreira (2004), the principles and concepts of the Ergonomics of the Activity were adopted, which focuses on: well-being, efficiency and effectiveness, considering that these three parameters go side-by-side. In the Ergonomic perspective, which originated in French-Speaking countries, adaptation of the work to man was performed, starting from the analysis of activity. The real working situations create a great expense of physical, cognitive and affective energies (Human Working Cost), forcing the worker to establish Mediation Strategies that reduce the negative impact caused by problems in the Context of Goods Production and Services (adapted here for the Context of Hotel Services) which can lead to illness. In the beginning, 19 maids from all 3 working shifts participated in the research, later the study was centered on the morning shift only. Two approaches for collecting data were adopted: the Ergonomic Analysis of Work -EAW (Guerin and cols, 2004) and, to go deeper into questions regarding the Physical Cost in the systematic observation, we used the OWAS method (OVAKO WORKING POSTURE ANALYSING SYSTEM). With EAW, document analysis, observations (free and systematic) and interviews (collective and individual) were made. To analyze the amount of data, descriptive statistic was used and the results were presented in frequencies and/or percentages according to biomechanical class. Supporting the analysis and generation of graphics, the statistical software SPSS version 12.0 and Excel were applied. On the other hand, the qualitative data had as reference the Bardin’s Thematic and Categorical Analysis (2004). As for the working conditions, pointers of insufficiency in working materials, flaws in the organizing support and problems with furniture were discovered. The organization at work revealed itself deficient specially about the division of tasks, deadline pressures and prescriptions of many different natures. The variability of guests, along with the lack of preparation of the bosses in leading the teams, are the main sources of uneasiness in Social and Professional Relations in this context. The analysis of this work, based on the model of Quality of Working Life by Mendes and Ferreira, reflected the problems in this context as generators of negative impacts in the Human Cost of Activity. This way, the uneasiness experiences prevail, and they tend to lead the workers to illness, as well as the elaboration of strategies to deal with the lack of flexibility and avoid uneasiness of the working environment, thus, the presentation of Health Certificates can be justified.
